How It's Made

Step 1: Collection

Whether it be organized collections, friends and family hanging on to their old plastic or picking up what we see floating around in the natural environment - collecting plastic is the first step in this process. We collect types 5 plastic otherwise known as PP.

Step 2:
Cleaning

Cleaning is a very important step in the process, though arguably, the least fun. Any contaminates on the plastic such as old food or dirt can negatively affect the melting process and make for a poor product. We clean every piece of plastic that we get before sending it along for production.

Step 3:
Sorting

Sorting should be a little be easier than it truly is. First by type of plastic - we can only use type 5. And then by colour of plastic. Unfortunately, lots of plastic we collect isn't labelled with its type, which means we need to conduct an experiment on density to figure out what kind of plastic it is. During this stage we also cut it down to a more manageable size.

Step 4:

Processing and Shredding

When it comes to plastic shredding the goal is to reach an easily meltable size.

Step 5:
Melting/Injection Moulding

Now this should be the easy part, put the plastic into the machine and come away with your product! But it takes a little bit more finesse than that. Lots of temperature adjustments and patience make for strong, durable products.

Step 6:
Finishing Touches

We wish we could pull products out of their moulds ready to ship but it takes a little bit more to get them ready to go. A little bit a sanding, a hole or two and a stainless steel attachment cord puts the finishing touches on our products. Nothing leaves the shop that I wouldn't be proud to show off.

Step 7:

Ship to you

And then just like that we can get them packaged up and shipped off to you, where hopefully they'll be a durable identifier for your bag for years to come.
